Understanding Permission-based SMS: How does an Incoming SMS Constitute Permission?

We value privacy and respect the communication preferences of our users. As such, we follow permission-based SMS protocols. This means we only send messages to users who have given us explicit consent to do so. 

One of the key ways that a user can give consent is through an incoming SMS. Here's how that process works:

  1. Initial Contact: A user might reach out to us via SMS for various reasons – to inquire about a product, request support, or subscribe to updates, among others. This initial contact often serves as an indication of interest. An initial contact like this constitutes permission to respond via SMS.
  2. Permission Request: If a customer would like to set up SMS notifications, we respond to the user's initial SMS with a request for their permission to continue communication. This usually takes the form of an opt-in message, where we explain why we want to contact them and ask them to reply with a specific keyword (e.g., "CONFIRM") to give consent.
  3. User Consent: If the user replies with the specific keyword, their action constitutes permission. They've explicitly given us the green light to communicate with them via SMS. 
  4. Confirmation Message: We send a confirmation message to acknowledge express consent and to provide information on how you can opt-out (discontinue SMS communication) in the future. This respects the user's right to control their communication preferences at any time.

Please note that consent is not indefinite. A user has the right to revoke their consent at any time. If a user sends an opt-out message (e.g., "STOP"), we must immediately cease all communication and remove them from our SMS contact list.
